Ben is one of ten finalists vying for SWOFCA award, held at the Hall of Mirrors in Cincinnati.

Team Captain Ben Leahy is a finalist for the 2009 “That’s my Boy” award to be held February 18th at the Hall of Mirrors in Cincinnati. Ben is one of ten finalists vying for the award.

(From the SWOFCA web site)
“The National Football Foundation-College Football Hall Of Fame/SWOFCA “That’s My Boy” Award is the most prestigious award for which a student-athlete in the Tri-State can be nominated.

The award takes into consideration high achievements in three areas: football, academics, and extracurricular involvement. Points are awarded based upon certain achievements in all three areas. Once the points are tallied from each candidate a “top 10″ list is complied and those become the Finalists for the award. A banquet is held yearly by the NFF (National Football Foundation) in February in downtown Cincinnati at the Omni Netherland Hotel “Hall of Mirrors”. It is a first-class, black tie affair that truly commemorates the achievements of the elite football student-athletes in the Tri-State area. It is a must-see event.

Scholarships are awarded to every finalist as well as football student-athletes from local colleges like Miami, Thomas More, UC and Mount St. Joseph. A guest speaker appears annually (Shaun Alexander, Mark Dantonio, Jim O’Brien, etc.) and speaks to the finalists.

The NFF ceremony is piggybacked by the Anthony Munoz Offensive/Defensive Lineman of the Year and the Marvin Lewis Foundation Coach of the year awards as well.”

Article & Photos by: Terry Marshall

On Saturday January 30th, the Monroe Community was invited into the Hornet weight training facility to see the traning regiment the team is using to prepare for the 2010 season. Right away you notice a lot of new faces and a good mix of veterans working to get stronger for the coming season.

The 2010 team will have some fresh faces taking the field on Friday nights but will return the key ingredients to last year’s playoff run. Third year Coach Ken Meibers is excited about the amount of starters returning for the Hornets.

“This year’s team will be a great mix of experienced players and upcoming talented young players. The offense returns several starters and some key positions. The offensive line returns two starters from last year’s 9-3 unit. Logan Stanger and Brett Timming will solidify the line with their 3 years years of experience. Quarterback David Routson also returns under center to engineer the triple option attack. Devin King will continue to crank out yardage from his full back position. He will be attempting to break the school’s career rushing total. Also returning on offense is Wide receiver Travis Hacker. Hacker looks to be a big time play-maker on the offensive side of the ball.”

The defense returns four starters with a lot of experience but Coach Meibers will be looking for some new linebackers for his Slant and Angle attack. “On defense Clayton Campbell and Jake Webb will stuff up the middle of the defense from their defensive line positions. In the secondary, the return of Zach Fugate and Ramone Boyce will pose trouble for opposing quarterbacks. The defense will have some holes to fill in the line backing core. There are multiple young kids that will be looking to contribute and fill into some of the vacant spots.”

The Hornets will be looking to improve on last year’s 9-3 record and playoff appearance.

2010 will also bring a change in divisions for the Hornets as they make the jump to the Southwest division of the Southwestern Buckeye League. Coach Meibers likes the way the team is responding to the workout program, “The off season has gone very well and attendance at weight training has been fantastic”.

The 2009 Monroe Hornet football team’s season came to an end Friday night at Kings high school by the hands of the undefeated Wyoming Cowboys in the 2nd round of the OHSAA Division III playoffs.

The 2009 Monroe Hornet football team’s season came to an end Friday night at Kings high school by the hands of the undefeated Wyoming Cowboys in the 2nd round of the OHSAA Division III playoffs. Monroe got on the board first with 2:42 to play in the first half on a 5 yard TD run by junior QB David Routson. Monroe completely dominated the first half, possessing the ball 18 minutes to the Cowboys 6, however several missed scoring opportunities allowed the Cowboys to trail by only seven at the half—Monroe 7 Wyoming 0.

Wyoming received the opening kickoff in the second half, and after both teams traded possessions, Wyoming finally dented the Hornet end zone when junior QB Kyle Seyfried matched Routson’s 5 yard run with a 5 yard run of his own with 7:14 to play in the third quarter, Monroe 7—-Wyoming 7.

The Cowboys came into the contest as one of the highest scoring and passing offenses in the State but until Evan Aleshire was able to take a Seyfried pass 55 yards into the end zone with 9:24 to play, did that explosive passing attack create any damage to the stingy Hornet defense. Aleshire’s 55-yard pass and run put Wyoming up 14-7.

Monroe’s defense, which had not allowed a touchdown in the second half of 7 straight games, played extremely well all night. Wyoming managed only 63 yards of total offense in the first half but they were able to manage two scores and 147 yards of offense in the second half.

Monroe’s final drive ended inside Cowboy territory with 3 seconds to go in the game, as the Hornets fumbled the ball away for their only turnover of the game.
Routson played a gusty game and led the Hornets with 85 yards rushing on 26 tough carries and 21 yards passing for 106 yards of Monroe’s 220 yards of total team offense.
Seniors Ryan Leahy and Nathan Morgan led all Hornet tacklers with 6 each. Final score Wyoming 14 Monroe 7.
Wyoming advances to take on Springfield Shawnee next Friday for the Region 12 Title and a berth in the State Final Four.

Monroe improved in Coach Ken Meibers second season as head coach, from a five win season last year to a 9 win season this year and a share of the SWBL-Buckeye Division League Title.
Many team and individual records were set this year. Celebrate the team’s season and accomplishments on Monday November 23rd at 6:00 p.m. when the Monroe High School host their annual Fall sports banquet.
