Just like the Monroe Hornets enjoyed a happy Homecoming victory last Friday, so it was for the Eaton Eagles this week.

Eaton, after leading by a score of 9-0 at intermission, quickly turned early 3rd quarter Monroe turnovers deep in their own territory into points in a 28-0 shutout.

Eaton was unable to take advantage of outstanding field position during the first quarter, starting their first three drives less than 55 yards away from the end zone, thanks in part to their own mistakes, and a determined Hornet defense. Eaton nursed a slim 2-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter before they were able to score the games first touchdown, on a short Nathan Clark run to take a 9-0 lead into the locker room.

Monroe took the opening possession of the 3rd quarter, only to turn the ball over. Clark scored his second of three rushing touchdowns with 7:26 to play in the third and his final touchdown 3 minutes later to increase the Eagle lead to 22-0. Eaton’s Sam Borst added the games final score with six minutes to play with a sixteen yard run up the middle; the extra point was missed resulting in the games final score of 28-0. Monroe managed only 60 yards total offense compared to Eaton’s 320. Monroe fumbled 6 times losing 4 of them. Leading tacklers for Monroe were; Jarron Teegarten (12), Max Agee (7) and Travis Rice with (6). The Hornets stay on the road next week taking on a hot Brookville Blue Devil team.

Homecoming 2011 was a happy one for Hornet players, fans, and alumni as the Hornets came back from an 11-point 1st half deficit to defeat the Valley View Spartans by a score of 18-14.

Valley View converted a Hornet fumble at their own 15-yard line to take a early 7-0 lead when Trey Gulling ran in from the 1 with 8:30 to play in the first quarter. Andrew Shaffer’s 27-yard field goal at the 2:42 mark of the second quarter pulled the Hornets to within 4. Valley View then drove 80 yards in 4 plays taking only 1 minute twenty two seconds off the clock. The big play on the drive was a 57-yard pass from QB Patrick Boyle to Zach Dunn. Monroe controlled the clock in the first half, gained more yards, but trailed primarily due to turnovers.

The second half was all Hornets all the time. Using a newly installed offensive attack and behind the hard running of QB Kevin Slonecker and running backs Jarron Teegarten, Max Agee, and Chris Wilson, the Hornets out gained the Spartans 212 yards to 12 in the second half. Slonecker, playing his first game at QB this season ran the offense to perfection and made one big play after another. Monroe maintained possession of the ball 17 minutes to only 7 for Valley View in the second half.

Slonecker found the end zone late in the third quarter from one yard out cutting the Spartan lead to 14 to 9 and then tossed a nifty pass to a wide-open Chris Wilson for the 2-point conversion. Valley View 14, Monroe 11. Chris Wilson found pay dirt halfway through the 4th quarter from 8 yards out giving the Hornets their eventual 18-14 margin. Monroe’s offensive line won the battle in the trenches enabling Wilson to gain 182 yards on the ground of the Hornets 302 team rushing yards. Monroe out gained Valley View 368 yards to 156 for the game. Monroe is now 1-1 in SWBL play and will travel to Eaton next Friday evening for a key SWBL match up.

Watch video highlights of this game on Wednesday September 28 at the Monroe McDonald’s starting at 7 p.m.

Behind a dominating defense and a grind-it-out, methodical offense, the Franklin Wildcats remained unbeaten with a 40-0 win over Monroe on Friday night at Monroe Stadium.

Franklin (4-0) forced five turnovers and limited Monroe (1-3) to 75 yards of total offense in the Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division opener for both teams.

Wildcats who were recipients of those five turnovers were: Brendon Sexton had a pair of interceptions, Nate Woods had a pick and Daniel Johnson and Oscar Romero recovered fumbles for the Wildcats. Johnson led FHS with 88 yards rushing on just four carries, most of it coming on a 72-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Chris Hymer added 62 yards on the ground and two scores, while Quenton Richards and Luke Kennard also scored rushing TDs and Eric Vanlandingham booted two field goals.

Franklin used a number of running backs all night long to keep fresh legs in their backfield.

The leading tacklers for the Hornets included; Jarron Teegarten 7, Alex Bake-5, Lamar Hodges 3 and Travis Rice 3.

Just when the Hornets appeared to catch a break, it was too good to be true. Trailing 10-0 in the second quarter, Monroe recovered a fumble deep in Franklin territory when the ball inadvertently hit a Wildcats player on a punt. But a penalty nullified the play and forced the Hornets and Max Agee to punt again.

Monroe entertains Valley View next Friday night for Homecoming 2011. The Monroe Athletic Booster Club is promoting next Friday as GOLD OUT vs Valley View. All Hornet fans are encouraged to wear GOLD to the game. GOLD OUT spirit packs ( T shirt and rally towel) can be purchased all this week from the Booster Club.

Monroe defeated Talawanda Friday night , at Hornet Stadium, 21-7, to earn their first victory in three games. The Pre-Game ceremony included a patriotic parachute fly in of the game ball in honor of the ten year anniversary of the tragic September 11 Terrorist attack.

Talawanda got on the board first on a 77 yard pass from Sophomore quarterback Colin Kimiecik to Dalton Prater, with only 1 minute and 37 seconds gone by. The PAT by Sam Poetter was good. Monroe evened the score at 7 six minutes later thanks to a 25 yard catch and run from Senior quarterback Ramone Boyce to junior running back Chris Wilson. Wilson has now scored at least one touchdown in the first three games this season. Andrew Shaffer remained perfect for the year on PAT’s. Monroe scored again with four minutes to play in the first half as Boyce found Emanuel Boatang from 16 yards out. Shafer’s PAT gave the Hornets a 14-7 lead. Monroe would nurse that lead late into the fourth quarter and with 2:50 left to play the combination of Boyce to Boatang struck once again, this time the pass and catch touchdown play covered 65 yards and after the PAT by Shafer the Hornets enjoyed a 21-7 advantage.

Talawanda made things interesting late, taking the ensuing kick-off into Hornet territory, however, a late interception with one minute to play by senior Lamar Hodges, ended the Braves drive and any chance of snatching the victory away from the Fighting Hornets. Monroe’s defense turned in another solid performance. Travis Rice recorded 9 tackles, Taylor Larison and Hodges snagged interceptions and Sam Rogers recovered a Talawanda fumble. Coach Brett Stubbs also pointed out the defensive play of Ben Klaiber. Hornet running back Chris Wilson left late in the 2nd quarter and did not return due to muscle spasms in his neck. His status for next week’s home game and league opener Vs Franklin will be determined during the week.

The Monroe Hornets entered the fourth and final quarter Friday night nursing a 7-0 lead, only to see the home standing Rams, from Ross, roar back with 12 unanswered 4th quarter points to defeat the Hornets by a score of 12-7. The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to dent the scoreboard. Ross controlled the ball and the clock for the first eight minutes of the game but came away with no points on the board. Monroe’s junior back, Chris Wilson took the opening kickoff of the 2nd half and after some key blocks and a nifty cutback, Wilson raced 95 yards, and unlike last week’s Kickoff return for an apparent TD, there were no flags this time around, and the Hornets grabbed a 7-0 lead after the PAT by Andrew Shaffer. Ross finally got on the board with only 5:11 left in the game on a 6 yard run up the middle by Codey Lotton. The PAT was no good , thanks to the finger tips of the Hornets Ben Klaiber. Monroe 7 – Ross 6. Monroe took possession of the ball at their own 35, after the Ram kickoff sailed out of bounds. Monroe was able to earn one first down before they had to punt the ball away to the Rams. On 3rd and 5, ball resting on their own 40, Ram quarterback Tyler Noonan rolled to his left, saw no one open, cut back and raced 60 yards for the game winning TD. Ross 2 point attempt was no good, giving Ross their eventual winning margin of 12-7. Once again Travis Rice turned in another good defensive effort for Monroe with 9, tackles. Jarron Teegarten had 8.5 tackles followed by Max Agee with 7. Noonan led all rushers with 128 yards on 23 carries. Monroe will be home next week as they host Talawanda.
