Devin King broke the Monroe Hornets single season rushing record Friday night on his fifth carry of the game. After the Northridge Polar Bear’s first drive stalled and forced a punt, the Hornets took possession at their own 1-yard line. With their backs to their own goal line, the Hornets looked to King to dig them out of potential trouble. King carried the ball on runs of 3,16,4 and 2-yards before busting a 55-yard run from the Hornets 26-yard line to the Polar Bear’s 19-yard line.
The long run put him over the previous mark of 1,357 yards held by Anthony Gregory in 1986. The Polar Bears called time out after the play and the Hornet fans cheered as the announcement about the record was made. Coach Ken Meibers collected the ball from the officials to present to King after the game.
King finished the night with 274 yards on 22 carries. He ran the ball just 5 times in the second half coming out early in the third quarter. King scored twice on the night, once from 2-yards out in the second quarter and again on the first play of the third quarter.
After Ben Leahy returned the second half kickoff to the Monroe 46-yard line, king broke free for a 54-yard Touchdown run to put the Hornets ahead 35-6.
King fell just 36 yards shy of breaking the single game rushing record of 310 yards, also held by Anthony Gregory. King’s season total is now 1,570 yards.
King’s post-season statistics will count towards his season total.
In 1986 when Gregory’s record was set the Hornets played 12 games.
The Hornets (8-2) will travel to Dayton Friday to play Chaminade Julienne (8-2) in round 1 of the Division 3 playoffs.
