In a game that came right down to the very last play, the Hornets were able to pull off an exciting victory over the Brookville Devils. The Hornets tallied up nearly 500 total yards on offense. Sr. quarterback David Routson was responsible for 387 of those yards, 118 yards coming from his feet and 269 yards passing, completing 12-14 pass attempts. David had some help from teammates Chris Wilson and Devin king who made big plays after catching the ball. One of those plays happened to be a 68-yard touchdown pass from Routson to King. King caught the ball near the line of scrimmage and rumbled his way to the end zone leaving behind him a trail of broken tackles.
Things didn’t seem to be going the Hornets way at halftime being down 20-13, but Coach Stubbs fired up the offense for the second half and the Hornets came out and were able to score three more touchdowns. In the 4th quarter with the game tied up 27-27 Brookville was driving down the field but as they got near the red zone the Hornets shut down two rush attempts and on 3rd down Brookville came out in shotgun formation and the ball was snapped over the quarterbacks head taking the Devils out of field goal range forcing them to punt. With a big run by Chris Wilson for a 26-yard gain and a beautiful catch by Dillon Hyden for 38 yards, the Hornets were closing in on a victory. On a crucial 3rd down while in Devils territory, Routson completed a pass to Chris Wilson taking the ball down to the Devils three-yard line. David Routson ran the ball in on the next play with 17.9 seconds left on the clock giving the lead to the Hornets 27-34.
Brookville was not going down without a fight. With a big return on the kickoff to Monroe’s 38-yard line, the Devils still had a chance to tie it up with a big touchdown pass and that is exactly what they did. Brookville’s quarterback completed a pass in the end zone with no time remaining. Instead of taking it into overtime they decide to go for the win with a two-point conversion attempt. The attempt was no good on a failed pass attempt. The Hornets defense held strong and the Hornets won 33-34.
The Hornets are now 4-3 and travel next week to take on the Oakwood Lumberjacks Friday October 15th at 7:30 P.M.
