The Hornets knew they had a tough opponent to face when undefeated Eaton Eagles came into town, but I don’t think anyone expected the outcome that we saw on Friday night. The Hornets were shut down on offense only gaining a total of 156 yards while the defense gave up a total of 416 yards to the Eagles offense.
Even though the game ended with the Eagles taking the victory 42-7, the Hornets still were able to show their heart and determination by stopping the Eagles on two key 4th down attempts. The offense was able to move the ball converting for 7 first downs but they just weren’t able to get into the end zone. Sophomore Chris Wilson was able to break for a big for a big gain of 47 yards to try and give the Hornets a spark which may have been the case because Sr. Devin King was able to break for a 12 yard gain on the very next play. But it appeared that it wouldn’t be enough to get the Hornets into the end zone failing a 4th down attempt on the same drive. Zach Fugate was able to make a big play of his own when he and quarterback David Routson met each other for a 38 yard pass completion. The big play of the game came when early in the 3rd quarter Sr. Clayton Campbell intercepted a pitch intended for the Eagles running back that started the Hornets off on Eaton’s 6 yard line. A couple plays later Sr. Devin King rumbles in for a 3 yard touchdown run to put the Hornets up on the score board.
The Hornets have the talent to compete with the best although they didn’t quite demonstrate it against the Eagles. I am confident the Hornets can win the remainder of their games, but we start next week against Brookville. So be sure to come out and show your support for the Hornets, game starts at 7:30 at Monroe Stadium.
