In a game that produced 76 points and 912 yards of combined offense, the Valley View Spartans rebounded from two consecutive defeats by defeating the Monroe Hornets 44-32 before an overflow homecoming crowd in Germantown.
Valley View took the opening kickoff and crisply moved down the field with a seven play seventy four yard drive capped off by a nine yard Kyle Pohl touchdown run with 9:06 to play in the first quarter. The PAT by Brad Miller gave the home-standing Spartans an early 7-0 lead. Monroe answered on their first possession with a six play forty seven yard drive that took 2:31 off the clock when senior RB Devin King scampered in from 6 yards out, the PAT hit the right upright, 7-6 Valley View. The hornet drive was set up by a 50 yard kick-off return by senior Zach Fugate. Three minutes and forty six seconds later Valley View would answer the Hornet drive with an eight play twenty-nine yard drive that ended with a successful thirty-one yard field goal by Miller. Back came the Hornets, first it was a eight play seventy five yard drive which ended with a one yard TD run by David Routson, followed by a Spartan turnover at their own 29 yard line. Monroe scored on the very next play on a half back pass from junior Ramone Boyce to Fugate giving the Hornets a 20-10 lead early in the second quarter. Valley View scored the games next fourteen points. A fourteen-play seventy-four yard drive that took five minutes and forty seven seconds off the clock. Again it was Pohl scoring on a twelve yard run, followed less than three minutes later on fifty three yard TD pass from Pohl to Ben Fanning. Miller made both PAT’s; at the half Valley View 24 Monroe 20.
Monroe received the opening kickoff to begin the second half and methodically march down the field scoring on a Routson two yard plunge, again the PAT was missed, Monroe 26 Valley View 24. The remainder of the third quarter and the game belonged to the Spartans. Valley View consumed the ball for twelve of the games final nineteen minutes scoring twenty unanswered points. Pohl scored on a nifty fourteen yard run at the 5:49 mark of the third quarter, Fannin raced in from one yard out with 4:25 left in the third, and then with 1:20 to play in the game, Spartans leading by 12, ball resting on the Hornet 23 yard line, Spartan place-kicker Brad Miller lined up to attempt a 30 yard field goal which if successful would have given the Spartans a 15 point lead, however, holder Kyle Pohl took the snap, and scampered 23 yards, just getting into the end zone, the PAT by Miller was no good. Monroe managed one more score on a late 38 yard pass from Routson to Hyden, ending the games scoring, Valley View 44 Monroe 32.
In all Senior QB, and University of Akron signee, Kyle Pohl accounted for 4 touchdowns and threw for another in the Spartan win. Devin King, who left with an apparent knee injury early in the third quarter, lead the Hornets in rushing with 83 yards, Routson finished with 70, mostly on scrambles as he was pressured all evening but managed to escape all night long. Senior transfer (Preble Shawnee) Jake Jarbo led Valley View with 142 yards on 23 carries.
Monroe welcomes in the undefeated Eaton Eagles this Friday night for Homecoming. Monroe’s three undefeated regular season teams will be honored during the homecoming evening activities.
