Things didn’t seem to start off well for the Hornets as they gave up the first score of the game, which also was Talawanda’s first score of the season as they were scoreless in their first two games. The Hornets were quick to respond when they capped off a seventy-six yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Devin King. Once again penalties plagued the Hornets all night but they were still able to stay focused enough to beat the Braves 44-28.
After giving up a touchdown the Hornets defense buckled down and were able to take care of business not allowing the Braves to score until late in the third quarter. The defense was led by Sr. Ryan Hayes with 7 tackles and Jr. Travis Rice with 5 tackles. The defense continued to make plays when Sr. Jason Mulihill intercepted a pass taking it down to the five-yard line leading to a Hornets score. The big defensive play of the night came when Lamar Hodges intercepted Casey Abrams pass for a 69-yard touchdown.
The offense of the Hornets kept on rolling over the defense as Devin King led the team with 140 yards rushing and three touchdowns. David Routson was locked into his receivers completing 12 of 21 attempts for 205 yards and one touchdown. With notable Sr. Zach Fugate out, the younger guys had to step up and play. Jr. Ramone Boyce stepped up to the challenge and had 3 catches for 81 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore Chris Wilson continues to impress, carrying the ball only 6 times and picking up 76 yards and one touchdown. Lets not forget the offensive line that did an amazing job opening up holes and creating great pass protection. The linemen of the Hornets show great mental toughness and conditioning as most of the players who play on the offensive line also help stuff up the middle on the defensive part of the ball as well.
The Hornets are still showing lack of discipline having 15 penalties totaling in 155 yards although they continue to dominate the offensive side of the ball. They have a lot of work to do but I am confident the Hornets can continue to dominate and win games throughout the remainder of the season. Be sure to come out and support your Hornets as we travel to Franklin, game starts at 7:30 P.M.
