It’s was a clear blue sky as the Hornets took the field with a look of determination glaring on the faces of the men wearing blue and gold. Especially for Brett Stubbs as he enters his first game as Head Coach. Some say it is a rebuilding year but Monroe looked seemingly in control all night only to beat themselves up with 11 penalties for 80 yards.
The Hornets defense swarmed around the ball all night only allowing a couple big pass plays and holding the Lions to a total of 26 yards rushing and 146 total offensive yards for the game. It was a very impressive start to the 2010 season but the Hornets still have a lot of work to do.
The Hornets wasted no time in creating an opportunity for themselves to get on the scoreboard as Junior Travis Rice busts through the line to get his hands on the Lions punt attempt tipping the ball and beginning their drive on the opposing 15 yard line. After a holding penalty and a false start, a first down seemed nearly impossible let alone a touchdown but a 10 yard run by senior Dillon Hayden seemed to jump start the offense that scored on a 23 yard touchdown pass from David Routson connecting with Hayden for the Hornets first score of the game. Things only got better for the Hornets who continued to dominate defensively not allowing the Lions to score all night in their 17-0 victory. “Our offense is working hard,” states senior running back Devin King who rushed for 101 yards on 22 carries tonight. Along side of King is sophomore running back Chris Wilson who made his Varsity debut tonight with an astonishing 16 carries for 111 yards. “King is a great mentor and helps me out tremendously on and off the field,” stated Wilson after the game.
Coach Stubbs was very pleased after tonight’s game but also expressed disappointment in his team’s lack of discipline. “Meadowdale is a good team but we can’t make the mistakes we made tonight if we want to win more games.” I will have to agree with Coach Stubbs but I say a 17-0 victory is a great way to start the season. Next week we take on the Ross Rams, so be sure to come out and support your Hornets on their road to victory. The game starts at 7:30 P.M. at Monroe Stadium.
